I want to say that 300 is a truly visualizing work art on the screen even if my screen was my tv. With a slight hesitation, I would say that 300’s eye candy was tapped way too often with the slo-mo action effects. If I had played the movie at 2x or 4x the normal speed the action would not have not dragged on or filled up most of the movie as much as it did. I am all for heads or limbs being hacked off only to see it float in the air for what seems like an eternity but after awhile the impact wears away. By no means do not I regret buying the dvd, I am though concern that Zack Snyder, director of 300, is now heading up Watchmen.
I finally read the book about 3 years ago and I was in love with the premise about a world that did not need superheroes. The Incredibles certaintly touched upon that theme which worked and mirrors the Watchmen storyline to a degree. I don’t want to go into details if you haven’t read it but this is a must read. ‘Nuff said.
The latest news about the casting for Watchmen is Carla Gugino who will play Sally Jupiter/Silk Spectre. Besides being another hottie on my next list “to do”, I loved her from the Spy Kids movies and Sin City(drool, drool, drool). However, the role of Sally is not a pretty one as depicted in Moore’s graphic novel. Going back to my earlier concern, Zack can pull off the action without any problems including some pretty graphic violence. However, Watchmen is a long story that needs time to develop many characters to tell the story. This is where Zack needs to develop his directing skills. In doing some research, I found this tidbit from IMDB.COM, “Terry Gilliam considered directing this film as early as 1989, but after several unsatisfactory drafts of the screenplay, decided the material unfilmable as a feature production. Gilliam had said he would consider directing it as a five hour miniseries at least.” As you can see, the story needs to be fleshed out in a longer format.
Malin Akerman (upcoming The Heartbreak Kid) as Laurie Juspeczyk aka Silk Spectre
Billy Crudup (The Good Shepherd) as Jon Osterman, aka Dr. Manhattan
Matthew Goode (Match Point) as Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias
Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children) as Walter Kovacs, aka Rorschach
Jeffrey Dean Morgan (TV’s Grey’s Anatomy) as Edward Blake, aka the Comedian
Patrick Wilson (Little Children) as Dan Dreiberg, aka Nite Owl
This information was taken from the official site for Watchmen. I hate to say this, I don’t know anyone in the cast except for Jackie Earle Haley but the Bad New Bears was so long ago. Since this movie is not coming out until 2009, we have plenty of time to speculate how this film will come together.
