Let me begin this review with this caveat about Speed Racer, it’s a popcorn movie. That’s it. I am not going to delve into the lack of plot or character motivation as this is not what most summer blockbuster movies do. The job for this type of movie is to entertain much like last year’s Transformers. What I will say is that the same attention to mise en scene the Wachowski brothers have created in past films pales in comparison to this technicolor noir style of moviemaking. The colors of the Speed Racer world really takes on a life of its own and you can almost feel the colors themselves jumping off the screen. There is so much movement with characters and the storytelling that the breaks between races is almost neccessary to catch one’s breath. Speed Racer is filled quick action that in a blink of an eye, you will miss so much. On that note, this movie does bear a second watching but perhaps see on the IMAX screens. There are lots of nods to the Speed Racer animated series including the famous Speed Racer pose which I found myself clapping. As far as for the whole family, except for one finger gesture, the movie is pretty tame with the violence as most of it appears cartoon-ish and not overly graphic.
So, again, there’s not much to say about Speed Racer except that you do need to make this a “must see” film. Let me know what you think.
