In light of the recent Ben Affleck casting news as the next Batman, this choice to have James Spader to play Ultron may not be a bad choice given his solid acting chops. However, the question will to ask is how will James play Ultron? Is Ultron going to be a CGI character/ mocap and James will give the voice or will we get James in an Ultron suit like the original Robocop played by Peter Weller, or Anthony Daniels as C3PO from Star Wars, or even the Maschinenmensch from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis? I think the choice should be old school fx and have he rubber suit and then on occasion use CGI for the more complex sequences; whatever may be.

Having said this, what if Joss decided on going voice only for the role? Knowing how Joss likes to bring back past actors he has worked with, I would have brought in Alan Tudyk who played Wash in the Firefly tv series and the film Serenity. If you watched I, Robot starring Will Smith, Alan voiced the robot character Sonny perfectly. Again, not taking anything away from James but Alan could have just been as good if not better in the role of Ultron.

Joss Whedon has chosen someone few people likely expected to play the villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron. James Spader, who became a sensation thanks to Steven Soderbergh’s debut feature Sex, Lies, and Videotape, and who has played roles in a diverse slate of projects in film (Secretary, Lincoln) and television (Boston Legal, The Practice), will play the character. Official info is below.

This will surprise a lot of people, I think. Thanks to the teases that link the creation of the character to Tony Stark, many assumed that Ultron, a mad artificial intelligence housed in an adamantium robotic body, would be an evolution of the Jarvis AI voiced by Paul Bettany in the three Iron Man movies and The Avengers. That’s obviously not what’s going on, and at this point we’ll all have to start coming up with new theories about just what Spader’s role will entail.
