arrow_season4_posterd1Watching Arrow for the past couple of years is like being in a relationship. The first couple of years are great as you’re madly in love. You love the stunt work, the clever use of the island flashback to add background to the characters and their desires, and the continuing growth of Oliver Queen.  However, then by the third year, things start to make a dramatic turn for the worse.

You’re no longer dealing with Ollie being on the island anymore in the flashbacks and 1/2 the season your hero is “killed” and your Black Canary is dead too. Let’s us not forget to include Ollie’s sister Thea is being trained by her father Malcolm Meryln. Our big bad for Season 3, Ra’s al Ghul wanted our hero to take over the league of assassins which would make him the ‘bad guy.” All the while, I keep wondering, how does everyone get to Nanda Parbat from Starling City so damn easy? I can’t take this any more. Nothing feels right. The show tries to push my emotions and force me to care but it rings hollow. This is when your eye starts to roam.  ‘I wonder what The Flash is doing?” Then you realize, I can’t do this, The Flash is the younger sister to the Arrow but DAMN The Flash is better and hotter. No, no, no, no, no.

By year four, you’re struggling to stay faithful with Arrow but you find yourself wanting to be entertained like you used to; you really miss those times. We are back to the island on the flashback with Ollie but it’s not as interesting. The Scooby gang is managing to make do without Ollie guiding and working alongside them but that does not last for very long. Mr. Queen happiness is put on the back burner to help them combat Damien Darhk. Sure on the surface it make seem like the love you experience from earlier in your relationship but then you bring back your dead Canary Sarah, Captain Lance seems to be in with Damien, and we get Diggle with a stupid helmet. Now find yourself texting The Flash, “U up?”

Can there be redemption for Season 4? This fall season has way too many quality shows and so far, I’m only watching it out of loyalty.

daredevil and game of thronesThis past weekend, I was in a rare state of geekiness. Friday, Netflix released all 13 episodes of Marvel’s Daredevil. For Sunday, Game of Thrones Season Five aired at 9pm and watched it on the new HBO Go app. Going forward, in the coming weeks, there will be new episodes of The Flash, Arrow, Agents of SHIELD which I can see the next day on my Hulu Plus service. I have three different options to watch my favorite shows and yet, I have to make a conscious choice on how to view them; to binge or not to binge?

Back in ye olden days, when there were just the big three networks: ABC, CBS and NBC and programming that I wanted to watch had to be done on the networks schedule. There were no vcr to record and watch my shows later. Flash forward to know, the choices of how to watch programs are now in control of the viewers; or at least a definite shift in our favor.

The traditional formats of network shows stretch their shows over the course of 8 to 10 months. Granted, I love this free model but when a show is getting really good towards the end of the season but I can’t stand the long waits between new episodes. Luckily, I can watch it on Hulu Plus and can play catch up with a couple of episodes already in the queue. This is great to do some mini binge watching during the week for a geek pick me up.

With the HBO GO app, I was able to watch the stream of season five of Game of Thrones at 9pm. Now, before I got the app, I did watch Game of Thrones through other options which required time to find it in the first place especially since I did not have cable. I am thrilled at having the HBO access due to watching the first episode. There were some bonus materials that I would expect on a DVD box set. Being new to HBO, I’m hoping that HBO does not follow traditional networks and delays episodes. There’s no need to follow the traditional tv models and for $14.99 a month, HBO Go better deliver.

Lastly, Netflix has the entire Marvel’s Daredevil series already for me. 13 episodes of uber-geekdom at my control. I can choose to watch the damn series in one seating or watch it when I feel like it; this is more satisfying. Sure, it’s not going to be the water cooler talk with your co-workers the next day but that’s okay because of you now have the online communities that’s 24-7. Even better, there will be less spoiler accidents on social media; in my opinion. Sure the first release of Daredevil reviews were out in force but so far, I have not met the same problems like when I miss watching a Walking Dead episode. (Which I have not seen the 2nd half yet so don’t tell me a damn thing!!!)
