Do you part to save this show! How???
This past weekend, I was in a rare state of geekiness. Friday, Netflix released all 13 episodes of Marvel’s Daredevil. For Sunday, Game of Thrones Season Five aired at 9pm and watched it on the new HBO Go app. Going forward, in the coming weeks, there will be new episodes of The Flash, Arrow, Agents of SHIELD which I can see the next day on my Hulu Plus service. I have three different options to watch my favorite shows and yet, I have to make a conscious choice on how to view them; to binge or not to binge?
Back in ye olden days, when there were just the big three networks: ABC, CBS and NBC and programming that I wanted to watch had to be done on the networks schedule. There were no vcr to record and watch my shows later. Flash forward to know, the choices of how to watch programs are now in control of the viewers; or at least a definite shift in our favor.
The traditional formats of network shows stretch their shows over the course of 8 to 10 months. Granted, I love this free model but when a show is getting really good towards the end of the season but I can’t stand the long waits between new episodes. Luckily, I can watch it on Hulu Plus and can play catch up with a couple of episodes already in the queue. This is great to do some mini binge watching during the week for a geek pick me up.
With the HBO GO app, I was able to watch the stream of season five of Game of Thrones at 9pm. Now, before I got the app, I did watch Game of Thrones through other options which required time to find it in the first place especially since I did not have cable. I am thrilled at having the HBO access due to watching the first episode. There were some bonus materials that I would expect on a DVD box set. Being new to HBO, I’m hoping that HBO does not follow traditional networks and delays episodes. There’s no need to follow the traditional tv models and for $14.99 a month, HBO Go better deliver.
Lastly, Netflix has the entire Marvel’s Daredevil series already for me. 13 episodes of uber-geekdom at my control. I can choose to watch the damn series in one seating or watch it when I feel like it; this is more satisfying. Sure, it’s not going to be the water cooler talk with your co-workers the next day but that’s okay because of you now have the online communities that’s 24-7. Even better, there will be less spoiler accidents on social media; in my opinion. Sure the first release of Daredevil reviews were out in force but so far, I have not met the same problems like when I miss watching a Walking Dead episode. (Which I have not seen the 2nd half yet so don’t tell me a damn thing!!!)
