Before I can agree with the title of the article, I wanted to put it out there that I was one of the early deserter of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. I’m not sure that I mentioned this but when a show that I had high hopes for lets me down rarely do I continue. For example, Heroes season one was one of amazing shows that won over me right from episode one. With season two, the series was dealt with a harsh blow with the writers’ strike which curtailed the season and rushed many of the plot points too quickly. Back to a full season, season three wandered and meandered until Hiro’s mind was turned into that of a 10 year old. I was deeply offended at this level of incompetence from a storyteller’s point of view. I had stopped watching Heroes and moved on.
Season One of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. suffered right out of the gate. Until the events of Captain America The Winter Soldier, S.H.I.E.L.D. had not direction or focus. I came back to the series after colleagues told me how great the show became and as well as listening to Clark Gregg on the Nerdist Podcast. Could this momentum carry over into season two? And the short term answer is yes.
This series has finally found its voice and with it came one of my favorite villains – The Absorbing Man. By this gesture, this comic book fanboy was pleased with nerdgasms galore. To boot, we also get Agent Carter and the Howling Commandos. There was finally some payoff to syncing these series to being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and not just treated as an after thought like cleaning up Thor’s mess after his second movie. And now, if that was not enough, this series is laying down the groundwork for the Inhumans to appear later. Now this is a series that I could watch and go along for the ride between the MCU movies. It has come along way to win my respect.
So the big question is, will Coulson appear in Avengers Age of Ultron?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a complex one. It’s one that’s scheduled out its roadmap of movies for the next five years, and is unprecedented in its thoroughness. No other film franchise has ever even attempted to be as expansive and inclusive as this one, making it a model for any studio looking for its next big cash cow series. Perhaps the most ambitious cog in the MCU machine has been ABC’s Agents of SHIELD, charting the escapades of Marvel’s shady government organization tasked with saving the world.
The way events have transpired in Agents has been nothing short of impressive. The events of the show have run parallel to major events in sequels to both Thor and Captain America, with the plot finding itself directly effected by events of the films in major ways. The Winter Soldier especially changed things up, wrapping up with the complete dissolution of the entire SHIELD organization. The show has existed in a post-Winter Soldier universe since then, where we’ve seen the fallout of that movie change and grow every character.

We are back; sort of. After much delay and computer problems, our latest podcast is now up and running. This is going to be a big show so I don’t expect you to listen to it in one sitting. However, you are stuck in traffic and marred by protests then by all means listen to this and forget the world… for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
